EXPONENT NRG

Power, energy and backup duration

A practical guide to reading a backup requirement.

FROM REQUIREMENT TO DELIVERY

  1. Define the business challenge
  2. Compare relevant solutions
  3. Review the technical case
  4. Assess the site and economics
  5. Discuss project delivery

Engineering guide

Power, measured in kW, describes the instantaneous load the system must support. Energy, measured in kWh, describes the amount delivered over time.

For a steady 100 kW load over two hours, the AC energy requirement is 200 kWh. Battery nameplate capacity is higher once usable depth of discharge, conversion losses and design capacity retention are included.

The PCS power rating must also address load transients, motor starting and operating conditions. Battery energy alone does not establish transfer performance or continuity.

Apply the guide

Energy Storage / BESS

Start with critical load, outage duration and operating consequences. Select the architecture and battery technology against that duty cycle.

Industrial Backup Power

Separate essential processes from deferrable demand, then coordinate storage, generators and controls to meet the required continuity level.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Turn this requirement into a project brief.

Share your site, operating priorities and available data. Start with an assessment, arrange a survey where needed, then discuss the project scope.
